“For unhappy voters who crave a breath of fresh air, there is Denise Kowal. She has been active in civic life, serving on numerous planning and transportation advisory committees. She has taken urban planning courses on her own dime, and has Duany’s endorsement.”

The Sarasota Association of Realtors announces candidate endorsements for the upcoming Sarasota City Commission Election this Tuesday, March 13.
The Sarasota Association of Realtors Political Action Advisory Trustees (SARPAAT) gathered information from each candidate for Sarasota City Commission and then conducted interviews with all but one candidate. After a careful review, they chose candidates for endorsement and those recommendations were approved by the Board of Directors. These endorsements, along with the rationale are provided for your information. Regardless of which candidate you personally support, SAR urges all of its members who are city residents to vote on March 13th for the candidate of your choice.
District # 2 Denise Kowal
Rationale: Denise Kowal is one of four candidates seeking elected office to represent District 2. She is a local small business owner and property owner who understands the challenges facing business owners in the downtown. She was also instrumental in forming the Burns Square Property Owners Association and has been an advocate for additional parking in the area and is a strong supporter for the downtown master plan. She believes there are some instances where a city commission super majority would be appropriate. She also supports the extension of the current Tax Increment Financing (TIF) district and believes affordable housing is an important issue to resolve. Based upon her past experience and participation in numerous governmental committees and her grasp of the issues facing the downtown we believe she is best suited to represent District 2. Note: Other District Candidates interviewed included Mary Anne Servian (Incumbent), Richard Clapp and Andrea Daniels.
